PEUGEOT 605, 405 & 309 OWNERS CLUB

HELLO AND WELCOME TO MY NEW WEBSITE.  I CURRENTLY HAVE ONE OTHER OWNERS CLUB WEBSITE FOR FORD KA AND FIESTA'S IT IS FORDFIESTA-OWNERSCLUB.JIMDO.COM.  THIS WEBSITE AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE TITLE IS FOR PEUGEOT 605, 405 AND 309 OWNERS TO CONVERSE ABOUT EACH OTHERS CARS AND ASK ME ANY QUESTIONS.  I AIM TO ANSWER ALL YOUR QUESTIONS IN THE "PROBLEMS" ARTICLES THAT I WILL CREATE BUT IF YOU HAVE A QUESTION I HAVE NOT ANSWERED THEN YOU CAN E-MAIL ME ON JMURRAY01@HOTMAIL.CO.UK.  I WILL TRY TO ADD AN ARTICLE EVERY COUPLE OF DAYS BUT WITH HAVING TWO OTHER SITES TO MANAGE IT WILL JUST BE IF I HAVE THE TIME.  ENJOY!

ENGINES

IN THIS ARTICLE WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT ENGINES.  WITH THE 405 THERE WAS THE 1.6, THE 1.9 AND THE 2.0 THAT CAME IN THE MI16 VERSION.  THE 2.0 WAS BY FAR THE FASTEST ONE IN THE RANGE.  ALL OF THESE MODELS EXCEPT THE 2.0 CAME WITH THE OPTION OF DIESEL OR TURBO DIESEL.  USUALLY I WOULD TELL YOU TO STAY CLEAR FROM THE DIESELS BUT THE TURBO DIESEL WAS ACTUALLY QUITE GOOD.  NOW, THE 309 HAD BASICALLY THE SAME RANGE OF ENGINES WITH THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BEING THAT THERE WASN'T A 2.0 BUT INSTEAD THERE WAS AN ECONOMICAL 1.1, 1.3 AND 1.4 SO IT DID HAVE A GOOD FEW ENGINES.  MOST EARLY 309'S WERE CARBURETED WHICH MEANT THAT IF YOU DIDN'T START THEM FOR A WHILE YOU WOULD NEED TO PUMP THEM A LOT TO GET THEM GOING AGAIN, REASON BEING THAT CARBURETORS DRY UP.  I WILL PUT A VIDEO IN THE "VIDEO" LINK ON HOW A CARBURETOR WORKS.  PERSONALLY I DON'T LIKE THEM BUT SOME PEOPLE DO.  NEXT I WILL COVER WHAT TO DO WHEN BUYING A 405.

BUYING A USED 405

SOME PEOPLE THINK IT IS SIMPLE BUYING A USED CAR, BUT IF YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THE CAR YOU ARE LOOKING TO BUY IS WORTH THE MONEY, THEN YOU SHOULD ALWAYS TAKE A MECHANIC OR SOMEBODY THAT KNOWS ABOUT CARS.  THE FIRST THING YOU SHOULD LOOK OUT FOR IN BUYING A 405 IS IF THERE IS ANY BIG PATCHES OF RUST.  BIG PATCHES OF RUST, IF UNTREATED CAN MAKE THE BODYWORK BECOME SO THIN THAT THE BODY WILL BREAK AND THERE WILL BE A RUST HOLE.  THE SECOND THING YOU SHOULD CHECK IS IF THE EXHAUST IS PUMPING OUT SMOKE OR A LOT OF FUMES WHEN TICKING OVER (IDLING).  IF IT IS YOU SHOULD NOT BUY THE CAR.  NOTE THAT SOME DIESELS PUMP OUT QUITE A LOT OF FUMES FOR A FEW MINUTES AFTER BEING STARTED FROM COLD.  YOU SHOULD ALWAYS ASK FOR A TEST DRIVE.  THE FOLLOWING THINGS ARE TO DO WITH DRIVING THE CAR AND NONE OF THEM SHOULD HAPPEN.  WHEN YOU LET GO OF THE WHEEL IT SHOULD NOT PULL TO ONE SIDE, IF IT DOES THE TRACKING WILL BE OUT.  THIS IS A FAIRLY INEXPENSIVE JOB TO FIX BUT IF IT HAS BEEN A PROBLEM FOR A WHILE THE WHEELS ON ONE SIDE WILL BE WORN.  WHEN YOU ACCELERATE THE CAR SHOULD NOT JUDDER OR LOSE POWER WHEN IN HIGH RPM (REVOLUTIONS PER MINUTE).  IF IT JUDDERS THERE COULD BE A PROBLEM WITH THE BRAKE DISKS.  IF IT LOSES POWER WHEN IN HIGH RPM THE CLUTCH IS SLIPPING.  YOU WILL, IN MOST CASES NEED A NEW CLUTCH.  NOW, BACK TO OUT SIDE THE CAR.  YOU SHOULD OPEN THE BONNET AND CHECK ALL THE FLUIDS, (COOLANT, OIL ETC...)  WHEN THE ENGINE IS RUNNING THERE SHOULD BE NO KNOCKING NOISES COMING FROM THE ENGINE.  CHECK ALL THE BELTS, NONE SHOULD BE MISSING OR DAMAGED.  SPIN THEM BY HAND TO SEE THE ARMATURE SPINS FREELY AND THAT THE BELTS ARE IN GOOD CONDITION.  THERE SHOULD BE NO RUST ON OR AROUND THE ENGINE.  LASTLY MAKE SURE YOUR CAR COMES WITH ALL THE MANUALS AND AT LEAST 2 MOT CERTIFICATES (INCLUDING CURRENT ONE) AND THE TAX DISK (IF IT HAS ONE) IS FOR THE CAR.  IF YOU FOLLOW THIS GUIDE YOU SHOULD END UP WITH A GOOD CAR.

PEUGEOT 405 REVIEW

IN THIS ARTICLE I WILL BE REVIEWING THE PEUGEOT 405.  THE 405 WAS THE SPORTY SALOON OF THE 90'S.  NOW, I RELISE THAT THE 405 WAS FIRST MADE IN 1988 BUT IT WAS NOT VERY WELL KNOWEN THEN SO THE 90'S WERE WHEN THEY SOLD MOST.  THE 405 HAD BRILLIANT HANDLING TO DRIVE THE THE 1.9 TD VERSION WAS REALLY GOOD IN A STRAIGHT LINE.  AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE PHOTO ABOVE THE 405 IS A BEAUTIFUL CAR.  THATS ABOUT IT FOR THE REVIEW.  IN THE ABOVE ARTICLE I FORGOT TO TELL YOU HOW MUCH YOU SHOULD EXPECT TO PAY FOR A USED 405 AND IT SHOULD BE IN BETWEEN £700 - £900.

PEUGEOT 605 REVIEW

NOW, IN THIS ARTICLE I WILL BE TALKING ABOUT THE PEUGEOT 605.  DOES THIS SHAPE REMIND YOU OF ANYTHING.  WELL IT SHOULD.  IT'S A MORE MODERN VERSION OF THE 405.  NOW DON'T GET ME WRONG, I LOVE THE 405, BUT THE 605 WAS IN MANY WAYS THE BETTER CAR.  LET ME EXPLAIN.  THE 405 WAS THE CAR YOU BOUGHT FOR IT'S SPEED NOT IT'S LUXURY.  SURE SOME MODELS HAD ELECTRIC FRONT WINDOWS AND LEATHER BUT THE REAL LUXURY VERSION WAS THE 605.  IT HAD LEATHER, AIR CONDITIONING AND LOTS OF OTHER THINGS.  THE ENGINES WERE JUST AS GOOD.  THEY RANGED FROM A 1.6 TO A 2.0.  WITH THE 405 THERE WAS VERY FEW AUTOMATICS MADE, BUT WITH THE 605, AUTO WAS MUCH MORE COMMON.  IF SOMEBODY GAVE ME A 605 I WOULD LOVE IT, I REALLY WOULD BUT I WOULDN'T BUY IT WITH MY OWN MONEY.  AS A GIFT THE 605 IS BRILLIANT, BUT THE ONE I WOULD GO FOR WITH MY OWN MONEY IS THE 405.  SURE IT ISN'T AS LUXURIUS AS THE 605 BUT THE ENGINES ARE A WHOLE LOT BETTER THAN THE 605 RANGE.  SO TO SUM IT UP, THE 605 IS A BRILLIANT CAR, BUT GO FOR THE CLASSIC.  GO FOR THE 405, AND AS IN THE 405 ADVERT IT REALLY WILL, TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY.

BUYING A PEUGEOT 309

IN THIS ARTICLE I WILL COVER THE THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR IN BUYING A 309.  THE 309 CAME WITH A 4 SPEED MANUAL IN THE BOTTOM OF THE RANGE ONES AND IN THE BETTER ONES YOU GOT A 5 SPEED MANUAL.  THE ONLY AUTO WAS A 3 SPEED SO AVOID THAT.  IT WAS AVALIBLE WITH A, 1118CC, 1294CC, 1360CC, 1580CC AND A 1905CC.  INCASE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT "CC" MEANS IT'S CYLINDER CAPACITY.  NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW THIS BUT THE PEUGEOT 309'S PREDECESSOR WAS THE TALBOT HORIZON.  IT LOOKED SIMILAR TO THE 309.  THE TALBOT WAS A TERRIBLE CAR SO DON'T GO FOR THAT.  THE EARLY 309'S HAD A HIDEOUS REAR END.  MOST 309'S WERE CARBURATED WHICH MEANT IF YOU LEFT THEM SITTING FOR A FEW WEEKS THE CARB WOULD DRY UP AND YOU WOULD NEED TO PUMP IT TO GET IT TO START.  OBVIOUSLY THE DIESEL MODELS WEREN'T CARBURATED.  THE 309 CAME IN 3 AND 5 DOOR MODELS.  THERES NOTHING WRONG WITH THE 3 DOOR VERSION BUT THE 5 DOOR WAS BETTER MADE.  I WOULD ADVISE THE DIESEL.  NOT ONLY WILL YOU GET ABOUT 7 MILES PER GALLON MORE BUT IF IT'S A GOOD ENGINE IT SHOULD START RIGHT UP AFTER ANYTHING FROM 2 MONTHS TO 2 YEARS WITHOUT ANY HESITATION.  THE SAME RULES APPLY WHEN BUYING A 309 TO A 405 SO I WON'T GO INTO THAT AGAIN AS IT'S IN THE 405 ARTICLE.  OH AND ONE LAST THING, DON'T GO FOR THE EARLY 4 SPEED MODELS AS THE CLUTCH WON'T LAST VERY LONG.  YOU SHOULD EXPECT TO PAY FROM £500 - £700 FOR A GOOD ONE.  YOU CAN NOW GO AND BUY A 309.

LOOKS A LITTE BETTER DON'T YOU THINK

Under the bonnet checks

Now, I realise that I haven't posted a new article since about Febuary, so here goes.  The heading says it all really.  First of all I will cover the checks you need to do, going from monthly checks to weekly checks.  Well, monthly checks are fairly small as most checks are weekly.  The first thing you should check is the belts and armitures.  The belts should be tight with no breaks at all and the armiture should have no rust or damage.  As I say there are not many checks needed monthly.  The last thing to check is if there is any black smoke coming out of the exhaust, if there is you may have a blown head gasket.  Weekly checks should be just basically checking all the fluids (oil etc...).  You should also check the tyre pressures regurarly (eg. every two weeks).  Thats basically it.  Happy motoring.
